The Burgundy Book

The conditions of service for school teachers in England and Wales or ‘The Burgundy Book’, includes conditions of service for school teachers in maintained schools in England and Wales. It is normally incorporated into teachers’ contracts of employment and includes the national arrangements for:

  • Teachers’ sick leave;
  • Maternity pay (although this section has largely been superseded by improvements in the statutory scheme);
  • Resignation and notice periods.

Each maintained school should have its own copy.

Where academies have transferred staff from the maintained sector under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations, the Burgundy Book will form part of their contracts of employment. It is down to the academy whether to continue to incorporate the Burgundy Book into the contracts of new starters or not, or whether to incorporate parts of it but not others (e.g. the resignation and notice periods but not the sick leave scheme).

The Green Book

The national agreement on pay and conditions of service, or ‘The Green Book’, contains a national agreement on pay and conditions of service for the bulk of white-collar and manual local government employees.

This includes:

  • Administrative staff;
  • Canteen staff;
  • Mid-day supervisors;
  • Cleaners;
  • Library assistants;
  • Site supervisors and other non-teaching members of staff.

The Green Book also incorporates the conditions of service for teaching assistants.

Most local authorities have incorporated the Green Book into the contracts of employment for relevant employees. Where this has happened, school support staff will also be covered.
