If you made a LPA or an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) application at the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) between 1st April 2013 and 31st March 2017, you are now entitled to a refund of the fee. You may also be entitled to interest on what you are owed.

The amount you can claim back will depend on the date of the application but it’s typically between £45 – £54 and is due on application fees for enduring and lasting powers of attorney, repeat applications, and remissions, regardless of whether the power of attorney was actually registered or not. A full table of dates and the amount of refund you can expect to receive is available on the government’s website.

How can you make a claim?

You can make a claim if you are the person who made the power of attorney (the donor) or if you are an attorney appointed in the power of attorney.

There are two ways to make a claim:

Method 1: online

You can make a claim online which takes about 10 minutes to complete. To do this, visit and click “claim a refund online”.

Method 2: telephone

If you do not have access to the internet, or are not comfortable making a claim online you can call the refunds helpline on 0300 456 0300 and choose option 6.

It’s important to note that if the donor has already died a claim must be made by phone.

What happens once you’ve made a claim?

Once a claim has been made it can take up to 12 weeks to be processed. If it’s approved, the refund will be paid to the donor’s bank account. However, if the claim is rejected you can appeal the decision by calling the refunds helpline.
