You may have read in the papers recently about the couple who have spent over £1.7 million pounds on their divorce battle? See The Guardian / The Observer article here.
The judge criticised them and described them as having driven their marriage ‘full tilt on the rocks’. They spent almost all their assets on court litigation and were even in court recently over maintenance, the judge commenting this time that they were ‘setting about the lifeboats!’ Both parties were solicitors so you would think that they should know how to avoid this. At the end of the case, they were left with only £90,000 between them after owning a £3.2 million house.
Litigation can be expensive and it is always best to try to avoid court proceedings but where a court battle cannot be avoided it is important to retain perspective and to engage the services of an experienced and competent solicitor who knows how to keep costs to a minimum.
