As was widely suspected, a lockdown extension has been confirmed for a further three weeks on 16 April 2020, prolonging unhappiness for those living with people they no longer wish to spend intimate time with. Lack of support from a spouse is amplified when trapped in a marriage with a spouse who does not understand the need for kindness, assistance and care during these difficult times.
It is apparent that five factors have to be satisfied before the lockdown is eased:
- Confidence that the NHS will be able to cope following a lifting of lockdown.
- A consistent fall in daily deaths, which would have to be for a sustained period.
- Reliable data evidencing that the rate of infection is decreasing to manageable levels.
- That testing capacity and PPE are available in sufficient quantity to meet future demand.
- There has to be confidence that a second wave of the virus would not be sufficient to overwhelm the NHS and provisions in place.
Given that, nationally, there is no suggestion that deaths are plateauing, it seems optimistic to hope that the advent of the next review in three weeks will result in significant loosening of lockdown measures.
