Meet the Team : Howard Cornes

Howard Cornes

I have over 20 years of experience, specialising in construction and engineering law. I have a number of reported cases decided in the higher courts that are now the leading authorities on the points of law that were in issue.

I undertake both contentious and non-contentious work. In respect of the contentious work, in addition to litigation, 1 have undertaken over 200 adjudications on behalf of employers, contractors, sub-contractors and consultants. In relation to the non-contentious work, I have considerable experience in drafting and negotiating main contracts, sub-contracts, professional appointments, collateral warranties, novation agreements, guarantees, performance bonds, deeds of assignment, letters of intent, option agreements and licences, etc.

Why I'm no ordinary professional:

I also have 23 years prior experience as a Chartered Building Surveyor and Chartered Builder working both in private practice and for contractors. I therefore have considerable knowledge and experience of both the construction industry and the applicable law to which it relates.

A bit about me

What’s the best place you’ve visited and why?

Egypt. My wife and I spent 3 days in Cairo and then 10 days on the Nile. Since being a child I have always been fascinated by ancient Egypt and I will never forget that first day standing in awe on the Giza plateau at the sight of the pyramids and Sphinx; then travelling down the Nile and visiting the Valley of the Kings and all the other unforgettable ancient sights such as Thebes and the temple of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel. It was a truly awesome experience.

Do you have any hobbies and what are they?

Unfortunately, far too many, but not enough free time to indulge them all as much as I would like to! I enjoy playing golf, the gym, cycling, motor sport (I do the odd track day) and playing the guitar (sadly not very well).

What is your favourite quote?

In life change those things which are within your power to do so and accept with humility and good grace those you cannot.
